Personal Finance – Busting the Credit Card Myth

December 2nd, 2008 admin Posted in Finance, Identity Theft No Comments »

There is a  lot of misinformation about money and credit, especially
credit cards. Misinformation is misfortune, make sure to arm yourself with The truth before you tackle the credit card demons!

Myth #1: “It is my fault I am in this credit card mess!”

The truth: It may not be your fault at all. Credit card companies are
out to get us. You probably just got caught up in their marketing trap.

Myth #2: “Credit Cards are what got me into debt.”
The truth: Spending is what got you into debt. The credit cards just made it
easier.

Myth #3: “My credit rating is destroyed forever and there is nothing I can do about it.”

The truth: If you have a job and are willing to work at it, you can get your
credit under control and your credit rating restored. Rebuilding your credit
requires that you do three things; pay your bills on time, look for better
options and learn about money and credit.

Myth #4: “It’s fine to give my credit card number for identification as long as I don’t authorize a charge.”

The truth: NEVER give your credit card number for identification

purposes. For that matter, you need to guard all of your personal information like a ferocious tiger. To learn more about Identity Theft and
how to prevent it, Visit:

Unless you initiate the phone call, do not give your name, address, phone
number, social security number, credit card number or driver’s license
number to anybody. All of this information can cause your identity to be
stolen or worse.

Myth #5: “If I pay off a debt or cut up a credit card, this information is
removed from my credit report.”

The truth: When you pay off a past due debt it actually restarts the time
period that it can be reported in your credit history. Cutting up a credit card
does not close the account. You must call the credit card bank to close an
account under all circumstances.

I have two identity theft accounts and they have become collection accounts. How can I remove them?

September 7th, 2008 admin Posted in Identity Theft No Comments »

I have two identity theft accounts. Someone use my social security number to apply for SBC and Direct TV. I never receive bills from them. When I found out about these accounts, they already shown as collection on my credit report. These have negative effect on my credit. I called up the collection agency for SBC and told them this is not my account. They are not willing to remove me. I have called up Federal Trade Commission and reported these. They couldn't do anything about this. I have try to consult free legal aids, they didn't make any reply!!! How can I remove these identity theft accounts?

Contact the local police authorities & then take out a civil suite against the company that refuse to make the specific amendments. One letter from your lawyer might be enough for the company to get their butts into gear.
The first thing to do would definatly be to make a report with the police so that an investigation can be started.
Good luck to you.
In Australia, my ex did this to have a phone connected so he could call overseas & not have to pay the bill. The bill ended up being over AU$4,000. He eventually was caught because the poor person whos name he was using contacted the police & they went down the right channels to find out whos name was on the leasing contract for that particular address. Keep at it because you should not have to deal with this & persistance (as trying as it may get at times) will prevail.
I will prey for you :o )

Free Credit Report

July 21st, 2008 admin Posted in Credit Repair, Identity Theft No Comments »

Free Credit Report

On December 4, 2003, President George W. Bush signed into law the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) act that provide one free credit report to all citizens of the United States per year.  This came about as the result of a rise in identity theft and the need for citizens to able to view and monitor their credit reports to check for accuracy of information.

Now, all United States citizens are entitled to one free credit report each year from any one of the three credit reporting agencies:  Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.  This one free credit report can be very valuable to the everyday consumer as it is used by most lending institutions and credit card companies to evaluate you and decided if you are a good credit risk.

There are various ways you can go about getting your free credit report.  You can go to any of the credit reporting agencies’ websites:  www.experian.com, www.equifax.com, or www.transunion.com.  There will be links there that can guide you through getting your free credit report.

Probably one of the easier ways, however, to go about it is to visit either of the following websites:  www.annualcreditreport.com or www.freecreditreport.com.  They will guide you through the process by asking a series of questions and asking personal things to help determine that you are who you say you are.  Within a few moments, your free credit report will appear on your computer screen and you will be able to save it to your computer and print it out so you can check for any mistakes.

I must warn you to read the fine print here – When you are signing up for your free credit report, these companies will sign you up, at the same time, for a membership program. These programs usually cost a monthly fee. – Beware -

Many people feel that the FACT act is one of the best pieces of legislation to come into effect in a long time.  Many years ago, the everyday consumer would have to pay money to see their credit report.  The information was almost held hostage unless that person wanted to “pay up”.  The FACT Act was written and passed to prevent this.

Legislators agreed that people should have access to information about them and that they deserved to be able to see what the credit reporting agencies have compiled about them.  So now, each and every American can get a free credit report each year.

We urge you to get your free credit report right now if you haven’t already.  It is how lending companies decide if you can get a car loan, a home loan, or a line of credit.  For many Americans, this is very important.  So, go get your free credit report and stay on the road toward having a clean credit record.

Credit Repair Self Help – Can You Repair Your Own Credit?

June 27th, 2008 admin Posted in Credit Repair, Identity Theft No Comments »

When you have found yourself in a bad credit situation, self-help credit repair may be the best route for you.  We are bombarded daily and often with companies which claim they can help you repair your credit for a small fee and you won’t have to worry about it at all.  However, the truth is that self help credit repair is not only possible, but really can be the way to go. However, you must remember to commit to the process.

Repairing your credit yourself isn’t as difficult as many people might think.  In fact the newest trend in credit repair actually is the self help systems.  All you need to do is start by pulling a copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting bureaus:  Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.  You are entitled to one free credit report per year thanks to passage of the FACT Act.  The other two, you’ll have to pay for, but the fee is usually small… between $10 and $15 each.

After you get your credit reports, the next self help step is to go through those reports very carefully and check to see that the information is accurate.  Most of the time, there are going to be errors of some type and you need to find them and contest them.  These errors can vary from a past due account that has been paid off to a debt that wasn’t even yours in the first place.

A little off subject, but very relevant. If you do find an account that was not yours to begin with, then it is very likely you have had your “Credit Identity” stolen. Identity Theft can be very serious and you need to act quickly and swiftly if you find this kind of error in your credit report.

When you find errors, it is time to take action immediately! You will need to contact the credit reporting agency both by phone and in writing.  You’ll be asked to provide proof of the error. The reporting agencies are then required to notify you in writing of their decision to either remove it from your credit report or leave it due to insufficient proof.

Be diligent in this endeavor.  An accomplished self help credit repair program entails being aggressive, committed and persistent when it comes to your information and the accuracy of that information.

Another part of a self help credit repair program includes the development of a long-term plan that will help you and your family keep your credit use under control and a plan for not getting into credit problems again.  If you feel your self control will not allow this to happen, then a credit counselors can help you do this.

But why pay the money and take the chance that you are dealing with a less than reputable company? if you are willing to change your ways and stay committed to the task at hand, then your confidence and accomplishments will not allow you to achieve your goals, but feel really good about it too. Imagine your pride when the phone rings during dinner and you are glad to answer it knowing it is not a creditor calling asking for money again! However, If you do find yourself slipping, then get help way before it is too late again!

Do a little research and you’ll find that there is plenty of information available on the Internet as well as software programs that can help you with your self help credit repair program.  Repairing your credit yourself requires a commitment on your behalf, but in the long run, you’ll be pleased with the results… and knowing that you did it yourself!
